Program content:

The study is rooted in the tradition of health and caring science, and is centred on the core areas health and caring ethics as well as interaction between health care personnel and individuals in difficult circumstances of life. Clinical health and care science is not directed at any specific field of work, but is discipline based, and acquired knowledge should centre on individual patient/users and next of kins. The concept clinical points to the close connection between the theory basis of health and caring science and clinical practice.

 

Target Group:

Health and social workers involved with users/patients and next of kins, regardless of profession. People who aim to engage in clinical research and development work, management of health and caring work in development and pedagogical work. People who wish to do a PhD.

 

Module 1, compulsory (30 credits)

HELS-GRUNL (15 credits): Health and Caring Science - Diciplinary base

HELS-ETIKK (7,5 credits): Health and Caring Ethics

HELS-SAMH (7,5 credits): Interaction in Difficult Circumstances of Life

Module 2, profile (30 credits)

Optional courses at level II providing 30 credits 

Module 3, compulsory (60 credits)

HELS-VITSK (15 credits): Theory of Science and Research Method

HELS-OPPG (45 credits): Master's thesis

After completed studies the candidate should have acquired the following total learning outcome:

 

Knowledge:

The Candidate:

  • has advanced knowledge of health and caring science as a basic science and an applied science
  • has an in-depth understanding of a specific subject area within health and caring science
  • has exhaustive knowledge of hermeneutical methodology of knowledge within research and clinical practice
  • has exhaustive knowledge of relevant research methods
  • has exhaustive knowledge of research ethics

Skills:

The Candidate:

  • is able to analyse professional problems in the light of health and caring science
  • is able to employ health and caring scientific knowing on new areas within his or her subject area
  • is able to analyse and interpret theories within health- and caring science
  • is able to employ clinical health and caring scientific reasoning in interaction with patients/users and next of kins
  • is able to argue explicitly in favour of care based on ethical basic principles
  • is able to carry out an independent, limited research -or development project through being tutored and in accordance with the current research ethical guidelines
  • is able to practice caring in his or her professional work

 

General Competence:

The Candidate:

  • is able to analyse health and caring scientific problems
  • is able to employ health and caring science in research and development work
  • is able to identify research-ethical problems
  • is able to create innovation and new thinking in clinical practice
  • is able to communicate health and caring scientific aeras of research, analyses and conclusions within the disciplinary field of research and vis-à-vis other disciplines

R&D Base:

Advanced level of curriculum. Lecturers and instructors: Professors, readers and lecturers from the university college and national and international competence milieus. The students are promted to link their master¿s thesis to the research programme Clinical Health and Caring Science.

Teaching methods:

Assemblies are held at campus and/or digitally, and the working methods comprise lectures, literature studies, tutorials, seminars based on dialogue, seminars, teamwork with proposal and written assignment.

Home examination, written examination

Student exchange:

Students have the opportunity to carry out parts of the study at other educational institutions in the Nordic region or Europe. Exchange in the Nordic region especially pertains to "Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies" Study programme in Health Sciences, Åbo Academy in Vasa, Finland, as well as the Department of Neurobiology, Caring Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. In Europe HSH cooperates with Canterbury Christ Church University.

Admission requirements:

Bachelor's degree within health education and social work or corresponding education.

Minimum mark C or 2.7, as average mark for exams applicable to the ranking system.

Minimum one year of clinical practice (employment: 50 % or more).

Professional and occupational prospects:

Clinical research and development work, management of health and caring work in development and pedagogical work. PhD studies at national and international University institutions.
